Need to be inspired? Or a cheap way to pass the afternoon? Need a day to yourself to reflect? Bangkok's Art and Cultural Center never fails me. Yesterday I was in a funk, for whatever reason, lack of sleep probably being the main culprit, and so I went for a five hour walk. There was no plan, no destination; I had all that I needed on my back and I started walking. Something must have drawn me to the Art and Cultural Center because it was exactly what I needed. The current exhibit, around until the end of September, is graffiti art. The 30+ foot walls are sectioned off and artists are given the freedom to paint what they feel. Shuffling my way up the oversized spiral walkway, hugging the walls of the center, I felt miniscule and insignificant next to the towering art. Once again a lesson on perspective. ((Exit Through the Gift Shop fans, you would have appreciated this.))
At the top of the spiral of color and texture was the most facsinating interactive gallery. It was like I stepped into Lewis Carroll's wonderland. It combined physical touch, with intellectual questioning and encouraged the participant to play, read, touch, write and observe. It made me think back to a conversation I had had earlier this week. While I enjoy exploring alone because it forces you to pay attention without distraction, I can't help but think when I come across something really special, that I had someone to share it with. Words can't describe it and pictures can't do it justice.
For now I'm just finding the balance.
I'll be headed back to the art exhibit this week, this time fully equipt with my camera, so I can visually share it all with you.
Here are a few pictures from the concrete jungle...don't forget you can click on the pictures to see a little bit closer...
These last two photos are of the same thing at the same point in time, just a different exposure. You choose what you want to see; choose wisely.
